INDICATIONS:

Used in treatment of urinary tract infection and respiratory tract infection, otitis media, skin and other infections due to sensitive organisms.

FORMULATION:

Each capsule contains:
Cefalexin ………………….. 500 mg

ABSORPTION:

Cefalexin is acid stable, and is readily absorbed after oral administration, food may delay absorption, intramuscular doses of the lysine salt are well absorbed up to 15% of a dose is bound to plasma proteins. The half-life had been reported to range from 0.5 to 2.0 hours and this increase with reduced renal function. Cefalexin is widely distributed in the body but does not enter cerebrospinal fluid in significant quantities. It diffuses across the placenta and small quantities are found in the milk of nursing mothers. About 80% or more of dose is excreted unchanged in the urine in the first 6 hours by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Probenecid delays urinary tract excretion and has been reported to increase biliary excretion.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS:

Cefalexin may cause abdominal discomfort and diarrhea in some patients, allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, a angioedema and anaphylaxis may occur, and rises in liver enzyme value have been noted.

PRECAUTION:

It should be used with caution in allergic patients, especially when there is a history of penicillin alergy. Reduced dosage is recommended in patients with severe renal impairment. The urine of patients taking Cefalexin may give a false positive reaction for glucose with copper reduction reagents. Positive results to the Coombs test have been reported with cefalexin and ehse can interfere with blood cross matching.

DOSAGE:

Adult:
250 mg every 6 hours or
500 mg every 8-12 hours increased to 1 – 1.5 every 6-8 hours for severe infections. Or as prescribed by the physician.

DIRECTION FOR RECONSTRUCTION:

To make 60 mL reconstituted suspension, mix thoroughly the contents with at a temperature not exceeding 30 degree Celsius and 14 days under refrigeration (2 degree Celsius – 8 degree Celsius).
